Four-time Olympic champion Mo Farah suffered his first defeat at 10,000m since 2011 (nine finals) as France’s Morhad Amdouni took the European Cup title.

On the women’s side, Liz McColgan timed her race to perfection to take gold and lead Britain to the team title in Birmingham, UK.

Since 2017, Farah, AIPS Europe Athletes of the year 2013, was more than 21 seconds outside the Olympic qualifying standard in his first track race as he finished eighth in 27:50.54.

Amdouni went away after halfway and was 11 seconds clear at one point before being reeled in by Carlos Mayo and Bashir Abdi. However, Amdouni stayed with them and had the strongest finish, clocking 27:23.27.

Abdi was second with 27:24.22, and Mayo was third with 27:24.87.

Marc Scott, who already had the qualifying mark, came past Farah in the home straight of the last lap, finishing seventh with 27:49.83 and securing his place in Tokyo for Britain in the incorporated trials.

Israel’s Selamawit Teferi led for most of the race with a margin of nearly 19 seconds with a lap to go on the women’s race. However, McColgan made up a 3.12-second gap on the last lap and took the lead in the home straight, clocking 31:19.21.

Teferi set a PB of 31:19.35 for second place.

Judd, running a PB and first Olympic qualifier of 31:20.84 in third, gained automatic Tokyo qualification with McColgan.

Czech Republic’s Tereza Hrochova (33:00.00) and Italy’s Pietro Riva (28:25.86) won the B races. France ahead of Britain and Spain in men teams, in women situation Britain over Italy and Poland.
