Shaunae Miller-Uibo at Doha Dimond League

Shaunae Miller-Uibo won the highly anticipated women’s 200m at the Birmingham Diamond League on Sunday (18 Aug).

Great British’s Dina Asher-Smith, who seemed to get the best start, and Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, matched Miller-Uibo strides for strides into the straight.

Fraser-Pryce, who didn’t get the best of start, made up ground and was right in the runnings in the last 70 meters. Asher-Smith led at this stage before the tall Miller-Uibo’s 400m strength kicked it and took her in front.

Miller-Uibo, who too got a rocky start, pulled away to take the top spot in 22.24 ahead of Asher-Smith, 22.36 and Fraser-Pryce, 22.50.

“The race didn’t go to plan,” explained Miller-Uibo. “My start was just horrible, and I had to rely on that 400m speed to get through,” she added.

However, Miller-Uibo said: “I’m happy for the win and ready to move on to the next.”

Fraser-Pryce said: “The 200m is something I’m still trying to master. It is still taking some time.”

Despite that, however, Fraser-Pryce said: “I’m happy with the outcome of today. I don’t think it was bad. I think it was a plus for me – I’m not a great 200m runner, but each time I line up, you never know because I’m ready to go out and attack.”

Dafne Schippers, 22.81, and the fastest woman in the world this year, Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria, 22.83, were never in contention.

  1. British media report: Having beaten all but one of the world’s best 200-metre runners at Sunday’s Birmingham Diamond League, Dina Asher-Smith received the biggest boost of all after crossing the line.

Confirmation that Shaunae Miller-Uibo, her sole vanquisher, will not contest the event at next month’s Doha World Championships now makes Asher-Smith favourite for a first global title.

  2. British people are celebrating about Dina Asher-Smith and her chance at World #Doha2019 I don’t think she can beat Elaine Thompson. They believe because Shaunae Miller-Uibo is not running the 200m that Asher-Smith will be the winner, but they forget ET

  3. The way I saw Shelly ran today, I don’t see her losing that 100m in Doha…Shelly was right there in the last 50 meters with the more accomplish 200m sprinters.
