Miller-Uibo, Christopher Taylor set NR marks; Richards wins 200m at New Balance Grand Prix

Donavan Brazier sets new American record, Noah Lyles, Michael Norman, Trayvon Bromell, Sandi Morris, Ajee Wilson win at New Balance Grand Prix

Shaunae Miller-Uibo set a new Bahamian 400m record while Jereem Richards beat Christopher Taylor for Caribbean highlights at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in New York on Saturday (13 February).

Miller-Uibo was on fire for the second time in two weeks.

Miller-Uibo, who set a new Bahamian 200m record of 22.40 at the American Track League on 31 January, lowered her own 400m mark to 50.21.

She covered the first lap in 23.92secs.

It was Miller-Uibo’s first indoor 400m since 2014, and she beat her previous best of 50.88 achieved back in 2013.

Miller-Uibo said: “We just came out here to see where we were at and get a nice race in. I felt really strong and overall I’m very pleased with the race.

“We’re just glad where we’re at right now,” said Miller-Uibo.

Americans Wadaline Jonathas, 51.95 and Jessica Beard, 52.60 and Phyllis Francis, 54.86 were the other race competitors.

Richards, Trinidad and Tobago’s London 2017 World 200m silver medallist, led from start to finish. He crossed the 100m mark in 10.98 and hit 21.14 seconds at the 200m before got over the line in 32.71.

Taylor, despite his second-place finish, set a new Jamaican record of 32.80. Taylor’s splits were 11.45 after 100m and 21.53 at the 200m mark.

Brittany Anderson ran 7.99 and Jeanine Williams 8.27 for fourth and seventh in the women’s 60m hurdles. American Keni Harrison ran a world-leading 7.82 to beat Great Britain’s Tiffany Porter, 7.89.

Ajee Wilson, 2:01.79 beat her American compatriot Kaela Edwards, 2:02.17 in the women’s 800m.

Sandi Morris cleared 4.60m in the women’s pole vault.

Gabby Thomas ran a world-leading and personal best 35.73 to beat fellow American Lynna Irby, 35.99 in the women’s 300m.

It was an all American affair in the women ‘s 60m dash after Jamaican Briana Williams’ withdrawal.

Kayla White ran away with the top prize in 7.15, a new lifetime best, ahead of Hannah Cunliffe, 7.17 and Candace Hill, 7.19.

was also on the top of his game. He ran 1:44.21 for new American 800m record.

Trayvon Bromell returned to winning ways in the men’s 60m dash. He won the event in 6.50 ahead of Demek Kemp 6.65.
Jamaican Kevaughn Rattray, 6.71 and Barbadian Mario Burke 6.72 were sixth and seventh.

Noah Lyles won the three-man 200m race in 20.80 ahead of Deon Lendore 20.92.

“To be honest, I still feel really good even coming off the 200, I could run three more.

“I actually feel strong which is really what we were trying to get out of training,” said Lyles

Michael Norman beat his USA’s training partner Rai Benjamin, 45.34 to 45.39, a personal best for the latter.

Norman said: “The main purpose of today was to compete and have fun, and to knock the cobwebs off because it’s been over a year since I’ve run that distance.”

Winston George of Guyana ran 48.11 for fifth.
