Lyston, Levell Headline Puma East Coast International Showcase

High school athletes from the United States will go head to head with their Jamaican counterparts in individual events and relays at the East Coast International Showcase, scheduled for May 7, 2022, in Landover, Maryland, at the Prince George Sports & Learning Complex.

Brianna Lyston, Brian Levell, Kerrica Hill, Oneika McAnuff, Gregory Prince and Delano Kennedy will be in action. The competition starts at 11 a.m. at Marvin F. Wilson Stadium, the State’s premier track and field facility, which is equipped with a brand new Mondo surface. Lyston will run the 200m.

This is the first year of this athletic contest, the brainchild of Jamaican Olympians Sanjay Ayre and Juliet Campbell, Puma’s Sports Marketing Representative and Partner with 2 Eagle Sports & Entertainment.

Campbell said this meet has been in the planning stage since the last JAAA elections. The executive’s mandate was “doing more to help track and field, especially the development. COVID slowed down the meet. “Puma has been the major sponsor of track and field in Jamaica,” said Campbell, the Lisbon 2001 World Indoor 200m champion.

“I thought about what further contribution Puma could make and what we can do to aid this development.”

She also said that investment in junior athletes is very important for Jamaica to continue to produce world-class athletes. Regarding the team-up, Campbell said she “contacted Sanjay Ayre, who lives in the Baltimore/D.C. area, where they have a huge interest in track and field.” This, according to her, was how they decided on where to stage the event.

Campbell said this meet will help to expose several Jamaican young talents, though she admits affordability is preventing a lot of schools from attending this year. “Many of our youngsters, if they don’t make their Penn Relays team, Carifta Games or World Junior, don’t get to leave the country. They don’t get the exposure with their age group outside of Jamaica,” added the three-time Olympian.

“So I thought it was a good idea to put on the meet outside of Jamaica and invite the top schools and any schools interested in coming.” She said Puma is fully supportive of the event and has hailed the involvement of the company’s International Marketing Manager, Pascal Rolling.

Ayre, a former standout Jamaican junior athlete and three-time Olympian, said: “I know the importance of giving our athletes an international platform to display their talent.

Continued development of our junior athletes will naturally translate to the success of our senior men’s and women’s national team”.

Ayre continues, “My relationship with Puma started 22 years ago when I was first signed as an athlete after winning a silver medal at the Sydney Olympics. When a premium brand such as PUMA that produces sought-after athletic footwear and apparel aligns themselves with our event, it brings instant credibility.

“Track and field holds an extraordinary place in my heart, so anything I can do to uplift athlete development will contribute to this beautiful sport. Our meet is fully sanctioned by the JAAA, ISSA, USATF and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS)”.

The event is open to athletes at every level. The highest priority will be to ensure that international teams and elite athletes receive adequate support throughout the event.
