Bryan Levell and Brianna Lyston braved rain and cold weather to win the 100-meter finals at the Puma East Coast International Showcase on Saturday, May 7.

Athletes, organizers, and officials showed grit and determination in 40-degree rain and heavy winds throughout the day at the Prince George Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland.
Lyston said that despite the conditions, she took it as a lesson. “It is my first time winning in these conditions, but I enjoyed it despite being so cold. I think it will only help in my development as an athlete,” she said.
Levell, too, relishes the opportunity to race in such weather. “I felt good about the race despite it being so cold. This is not something that I am used to, but I think I did well,” he said. Lyston won the girls’ 100-meter final in 11.53 seconds ahead of her teammate Kerrica Hill (11.64) and Laila Campbell of Spring Grove (11.80). Lyston ran 11.71 to qualify.
In his highly anticipated clash with the USA’s fastest high schooler Jordan Anthony of Tylertown High, Levell won in 10.66 seconds to the American’s 10.81. Anthony had recorded the quickest time, 10.69, to Levell’s 10.77 in the preliminary round. Shamali Whittle of Hamilton North ran 10.87 in the heats, but skipped the final. He returned to win the 200 meters in 21.16.
Hydel’s captain Oneika McAnnuff won the 400 meters in 54.24 seconds ahead of Madison Whyte of Heritage, 54.71. Amal Glasgow of Kingston College ran 47.53 to Delano Kennedy of Edwin Allen, 47.56 in the 400m time final.
Mackaeda Linton of St. Jago topped the girls’ long jump.
St. Jago boys won the 4×100-meter relay in 42.55 with Gregory Prince on anchor, while the girls’ topped their race.
In the boys’ 110-meter hurdles, Jahvel Granville of St. Jago won in 13.88 seconds ahead of Sharvis Simmonds of Excelsior (13.98) and Shamer Blake of STETHS (14.37). Blake also won the 400-meter hurdles in 53.97. Tafar-hi Hinds of St. Jago ran 1:57.73 to finish ahead of his teammate Corlando Chambers, 1:58.91 in the boys’ 800 meters.
Oneka Wilson of Hydel took the girls’ 100-meter hurdles, running 14.13 seconds to beat Bullis High School’s pair of Kennedy Flynn (14.63) and Gabby White, (14.94).
