AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track and Field sophomore Leo Neugebauer was named the Big 12 Men’s Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career, the league office announced Tuesday (3 Feb).

Neugebauer’s recognition marks the second-straight week a Longhorn has received the Big 12’s weekly honour for men’s competitors, following Tripp Piperi a week ago.

Neugebauer, a German international, grabbed hold of the NCAA lead in the heptathlon by scoring 5,960 points – his lifetime best in the competition – at the Texas Tech Invitational this past weekend. Neugebauer won four of the seven events (Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, Pole Vault) and set his collegiate-best marks in the 60-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, shot put and high jump. Neugebauer’s 5,960-point tally moved him up to No. 3 on Texas’ top performers’ list, and was the best score by a Longhorn since Donovan Kilmartin and Trey Hardee both crossed the 6,000-point mark in 2006.

Last season, Neugebauer earned USTFCCCA All-America honours as an NCAA Championships qualifier in the heptathlon. He was also the Big 12 Champion in the event and was named the 2020 Big 12 Men’s Indoor Outstanding Freshman of the Year.
