Tamari Davis sets world U18 60m record

Tamari Davis produced a World age group record run to beat Jamaican Kiara Grant at the South Carolina Gamecock Opener on Friday, 17 January.

Davis, representing Empire Athletics at the Indoor Track and Field Complex in Columbia, S.C., ran 7.19 to set a new World U-18 record. Davis’ mark lowered the World U-18 mark of 7.24, established in 2007 in Houston by Victoria Jordan. She now holds World age-group records at 14 (7.30), 15 (7.25) and 16 (7.19).

The time also equalled the fastest indoor 60-meter dash time in American high school history.

Jamaican Kiara Grant, a junior at Norfolk State University, equalled her career-best with 7.22 to take the second spot.

Davis, 16, and Jamaica’s rising star Briana Williams enjoyed some great battles in 2018. Williams won the 100m (11.31) to Davis’ 11.36, but the latter topped the 200m 22.48 to 23.15 at the Florida State High School Outdoor Championships.

  1. Fine run by Kiara Grant. Her steady progress continues. Tamari Davis, at not even 17 yet, is something else though. If this is her new ‘level’ over 60m, her 100m (out) and 200m (in and out) will be frightening.
