Kevroy Venson stands tall at Cooperate Meet

Kingston College (KC) was the top team. However, Calabar High’s Kevroy Venson commanded the most attention at the end of Saturday’s (15 Feb) Digicel-sponsored Corporate Area Development Meet at the National Stadium.

Venson hurt KC in at least two ways. He easily dismissed KC’s African duo of Aron Tanui 15:44.90 and Aryamanya Rodgers 15:56.24 in the 5,000m open.
And if that wasn’t enough, when he crossed the line in 14:55.67, the names of KC and Shane Buchanan, who ran 15:11.71 three years ago, were removed from the record book.

Mickayla Gardener of Wolmer’s Girls’ was responsible for two of the many records fell on the day.
She ran 11.75 to beat the Class 3 100m dash old record of 11.89 by Kiara Grant, set back in 2015, and then 24.46 to erase Ackera Nugent’s old mark of 24.64 in the 200m dash.

Immaculate Jaida Creary ran 11.95 to win the Class 4 girls’ 100m and bettered the 2016 old mark of 11.06

KC’s Roshaun Rowe ran 10.45 to equalled JC’s Edward Clarke’s 2015 Class 1 boys’ 100m record.
Adrian Kerr, also of KC, topped the Class 2 boys’ 100m dash final in a new record of 10.63. Calabar’s David Lynch with 10.77 also went below the previous mark of 10.79,

Ra’John Gray of KC was also in the record-breaking mood, running 13.20 to beat the old Class 3 100m hurdles record of 13.44.

JC’s Mark Miller ran 22.08 for a new Class 3 boys’ 200m record. KC’s Nkrumie Bouwahjgie had the previous best of 22.43.

Akeel Hanchard of KC, 60.49m, became the first athlete to throw over 60m in the javelin open event.

Tyrone Lawson of JC ran 4:18.93 in the Class 3 boys’ 1500m to lower 4:22.63.

Aaron McKenzie cleared a record 1.85m to win the Class 3 boys’ high jump. Torian Caven of Ardenne, 1.70m and Shanniqua Williams of Wolmer’s, 1.55m set records in the Classes 3 and 4 girls’ high jump.

KC topped the points standings with 488 points, well ahead of Jamaica College (JC) 308 and Calabar 289. Wolmer’s 178 and Excelsior 141 rounded off the top five teams.

Excelsior won the girls section with 280.5, narrowly beating Wolmer’s 262.5 and The Queens School 243. Immaculate 169.5 and St. Andrew High 125 completed the top five schools.
