Jodyann Mitchell Smashes Class One Girls 1500m Record Boys and Girls at Champs23

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jodyann Mitchell from Holmwood Technical made history at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica on Wednesday, 29 March, winning the women’s Class One 1500m final with a record-breaking performance at Champs23.

Mitchell completed the race in a stunning 4:29.42, smashing the previous record of 4:30.64 set by Natoya Goule 13 years ago in 2010. KC Dominates Boys’ Races at Champs 2023

Kingston College (KC) showcased their dominance at Champs 2023, winning two gold medals in three finals on the boys’ side. In the Class Two race, Brian Kiprop and Nahashon Ruto led a KC 1-2 finish, with Kiprop clinching the gold medal with a time of 4:07.46, and Ruto taking the silver with 4:07.64. Ainsley Campbell then stepped up in the Class One boys’ race, clocking an impressive 4:02.63 to win the gold for KC.

Corlando Chambers from St. Jago High and Kemarrio Bygrave from Jamaica College finished with the silver and bronze medals, respectively, with times of 4:04.19 and 4:05.26. KC’s Ethan Gioko held the lead for most of the race but faded back into fourth place, finishing with a time of 4:05.87.

Other Winners at Champs23

Alikay Reynolds of Alphansus Davis took home the gold medal in the Class Three girls’ race with a time of 4:46.36, while Carlos Brison-Caines from Calabar High won the Class Three boys’ race with 4:18.18, just holding off Jayden Brown from Maggotty High. Monique Stewart from Edwin Allen High won the Class Two girls’ title with a time of 4:41.43, narrowly beating Cindy Rose from Holmwood Technical, who also posted the same time.
