BOSTON, USA – Janeek Brown was the best-placed Jamaica while Asafa Powell finished fifth at today’s 25 January 2020 Boston Indoor Grand Prix, the first stop in the World Athletics Indoor Series.

Brown, in the women’s 60m, ran a season-best 8.00s flat to take third behind World 100m hurdles champion Nia Ali, 7.94 and her American teammate Christina Clemons, 7.98s.

“I lost my rhythm over the last two hurdles, so that’s a take away that there is an improvement and I could have run a faster time,” she said.

“But I did season-best, I came out better than I did last week, so Im grateful for it,” Brown added.

Ali commented: “I felt like it was a great start. It was pretty rough, but I’m so excited to be back running, and I’ve never opened my season that fast so I’m excited.”

Two other Jamaicans Britany Anderson, 8.07, a personal best, and Jeanine Williams, 8.14, were fourth and seventh respectively.

Anderson said, “I feel great because it’s my first indoor meet.”

Williams, however, wasn’t happy saying “Not really happy with it (race). It started well, but then it got sloppy, so I have to go back to training (to work on that).”

Earlier in the heats, Brown ran 8.06, Anderson 8.12 and Williams 8.14.

Asafa Powell, in the men’s 60m, ran 6.71 in his first indoor meet of the season. Americans Demek Kemp, 6.50 and Keitavious Walter, 6.61, finished first and second respectively.

“I am feeling good; I crossed the finish line healthy. The game plan was just to come here and feel out the legs,” said Powell, who added he is going hard in practice.

Kemp, the race winner, said: “It feels great.”

“I ran the race like I wanted to and got away from the competition. Got a great PR, so I’m fine with that,” he added.

American Gabby Thomas was impressive in the women’s 300m. She led from the gun to stop the clock in 36.52, just falling short of the meet record.

Shamier Little, the winner of heat two, finished second overall in 37.07 while Jessica Beard ended third in 37.58.

“It was really great to compete at home, here in Boston. A lot of people come out to see me, and it means a lot,” she Thomas.

Thomas was running her first race out of college. “This being my first year out of college and having that energy around me; it’s a really an amazing feeling.”

“I’m happy to be back. I’m happy to be home,” she added.
