Caribbean athletes performed reasonably well at the Meyo Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana on the weekend (7-8 Feb).
Jamaican Nayoka Clunis won the women’s weight throw with 22.02m ahead of Laulauga Tausaga 22.00.
Clunis threw 16.13m in the shot put for 7th, the same event, another Jamaican, Devia Brown, representing Minnesota, threw 16.87m for 4th. Laulauga Tausaga won with 17.96m.
Janielle Josephs, a member of Jamaica’s World U20 team to Finland in 2018, ran away with the top spot in the women’s 400.
The former St Andrew High student, now representing Minnesota, won the A race in 54.66 ahead of Emma Lane, 54.95.
In the women’s championship 400m, Chika Iwuamadi 53.52 beat Niki Scherer 53.80 and Tamani Wilson 54.18.
Wayne Lawrence (JAM) ran 46.09 to take the top spot in the men’s 400m ahead of Taj Burgess 46.64.
Rikkoi Brathwaite of British Virgin Islands (BVI) ran 6.76 in the men’s 60m heats. He won the 200m in 21.23s ahead of Zachary Jewell of Central Arkansas (21.35), the 60m winner in 6.78.
Reanda Richards of St. Kitts and Nevis ran 1.30.23 in the women’s 600m. The top finisher was Mallory King 1.29.20
Darion Dunn topped the men’s 60m hurdles final in 7.94, but Josh Zeller (GBR) with 7.86 in the heats had the day’s fastest time.
Amira Young 7.36 and Octavia Cato (NGR) 7.47 were the top 60m finishers in the final. Amira Young 7.38 and Brooke Bogan 7.48 in the heats.
Yared Nuguse, a two-time national champion, turned in all-time performance in Loftus Sports Center in the 3,000m run. The junior won the race with a time of 7:46.71, setting the Notre Dame program record, the Loftus Sports Center record and the top time in DI this season.
