Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) has welcomed the latest decision by the IOC regarding the staging of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

IOC President Thomas Bach, in a letter to athletes on Sunday (22 March), said: “We are working very hard, and we are confident that we will have finalised these discussions within the next four weeks.”

“Together with all the stakeholders, we have started detailed discussions today to complete our assessment of the rapid development of the worldwide health situation and its impact on the Olympic Games, including a scenario of postponement,” Bach wrote.

JOA President Christopher Samuda, in a statement on Monday (23 March), said: “I welcome the decision of the IOC Executive Board to engage in a four-week study of all scenarios.”

Samuda added: “The timeline it has stipulated for decision making is basically in keeping with the time frame which the JOA indicated from the very inception.”

Several athletes, sporting federations and fans have been calling on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to postpone the games because of the coronavirus, which has killed over 15,300 people worldwide.

The virus caused many qualifying events to be postponed or cancelled in the last two months. Some athletes are unable to train due to the containment measures in their country.

“The opinions of the experts and critical stakeholders will now converge in that four week period with the governing consideration being the health and safety of athletes, coaches and officials,” continued Samuda.

“I am confident that consensus will be achieved in the Olympic family as we all continue to grapple with the global crisis in search of solutions.

“The JOA stands firmly with our athletes and has made it absolutely clear that the ultimate decision must be the result of robust stakeholder consultation and consensus,” concluded Samuda’s statement.

The Games of the XXXII Olympiad is set for 24 July to 9 August.

  1. I was thinking September or so. Because now everything else is gonna be affected. Including World Championships 2021. Why not later in the year? Even up until November or so
