KINGSTON, Jamaica (April 6) – Jamaica is willing to host the 2024 World Athletics Under-20 Championships, said Garth Gayle, the President of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA). The event was originally scheduled to take place in Lima, but due to political instability, social unrest, and natural disasters, the city withdrew its hosting bid.

Gayle expressed confidence in Jamaica’s ability to host the championships, but emphasized the importance of having sufficient financial support. “Jamaica is always ready to host track and field events,” he stated during an interview with Nation Wide Radio. “We would have proven that we can do it when we took on the 49th staging of the Carifta Games last year, but it was at a cost. Now, this is a higher level of competition.”

The JAAA President also noted that hosting the championships for over 200 member federations of World Athletics would be a significant challenge, but one that Jamaica is capable of meeting. “The timeline is very, very short but not impossible,” he added.

Jamaica previously hosted the event in 2002, which saw the emergence of Usain Bolt as a prominent athlete.
