TOKYO (JPN): Tokyo 2020 organisers scotched rumours that this year’s Games could be cancelled or postponed due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Several sporting events, mostly in China, have been cancelled or postponed due to the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak in China.

“We have never discussed cancelling the games,” LOCOG said in a statement to the Associated Press, which was mirrored by comments from the IOC.

“Tokyo 2020 will continue to collaborate with the IOC and relevant organisations and will review any countermeasures that may be necessary,” the IOC said.

On Wednesday, 29 January, World Athletics announced the postponement of it’s World Indoor Championships, Nanjing2020.

“The advice from our medical team, who are in contact with the World Health Organisation, is that the spread of the Coronavirus both within China and outside the country is still at a concerning level and no one should be going ahead with any major gathering that can be postponed,” World Athletics said in a release.

The World Health Organization declaration of the novel Coronavirus is at a global health emergency.

Jamaicans Elaine Thompson and Usain Bolt won the women’s and men’s sprint double at the last Olympic Games, Rio 2016. Omar McLeod won the men’s 110m hurdles.

Jamaica’s men’s 4x100m team also took gold.

  1. Change to where, Japan is not the same as World indoors in China, which is where the out break started, also it seems that most countries are reporting the virus from people, who have travelled or come from Wuhan, Hubei province of China.
