IOC President Thomas Bach, according to insidethegames.biz, said it would have been easier for the IOC to cancel the Tokyo 2020 Games than to reschedule for 2021.

“Cancelling the Games due to force majeure would have been easier for the IOC, and we would have had the insurance revenue,” the IOC president was quoted as saying.

“But we are there to organize the Games, not to cancel them,” he said.

The postponement of the Olympics has caused sizeable financial considerations with the IOC estimating that the cost to itself will be up top 650 million USD.

The coronavirus, which has killed over 573,000 people worldwide, caused many qualifying events to be postponed or cancelled in the last two months. Some athletes are unable to train due to the containment measures in their country.
