Kenia Sinclair

A special Jamaican is celebrating her birthday today, 14 July. She is Jamaica’s middle-distance queen.

She is Kenia Sinclair. The 40-year-old, who won Jamaica’s only female global 800m medal, is now retired. In June 2005, she broke Inez Turner’s 10-year-old record to become the 5th Jamaican to run sub-2-minutes.

Two months later, Sinclair again lowered the mark to 1.58.88.

In 2006, the former St. Jago star, won silver at the World Indoor Championships, a first in the event for Jamaica. The time, 1:59.54s, was at the time a Jamaican record.

Less than two weeks after, Sinclair pocketed another silver medal, this time at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. Again, the winning time, 1:58.16 was a Jamaican record.

Later in the year, Kenia went on to lower the record again to 1:57.88 at a meeting in Réthimno

She also won silver medals at the Central American and Caribbean Championships and Continental Cup.

Her personal best remains at 1:57.88 outdoor and 1:59.54.
