Tyra Gittens

Trinidad and Tobago’s Tyra Gittens was named the Southeastern Conference Co-Field Athlete of the Week; the league announced Tuesday (13 April).

Gittens won the Texas A&M Invitational heptathlon with a personal best score of 6,274 points. The performance bettered her previous school record by 200 points and is an NCAA-leading mark. She also became the seventh-best performer in collegiate history.

It is the second consecutive week Texas A&M Track & Field’s Gittens has earned an SEC weekly honour.

The multi-athlete won all four events on day one of the heptathlon while setting two all-conditions personal best in the 100m hurdles at 13.14 (w/+3.5) and 200m with a time of 23.33 (w/+4.4).

Gittens continued to show her dominance, winning two of three events on day two, the long jump at a wind-aided mark of 21-10.75 (6.67m) and the javelin with a toss of 125-1 (38.13m). She placed second in the 800m at 2:28.52 to finish her record performance.
