Seven records were broken on Saturday’s (5 April) final day at the 2014 Intercol Track and Field Championships as GC Foster College completed the double by winning the male and female sections.
The championships took place at the Usain Bolt Track at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus.
GC Foster topped the female section with 201 points, 12 more than the University of Technology (Utech) 189 and UWI, the only other team to score over 100 points. UWI ended with 127.5 points.
The top three were followed by Mico University College with 68 points, College of Agriculture and Science (CASE) 45.5, Church Teacher’s College and Montego Bay Community College 13, Portmore Community College 10, Moneague Teachers College 8 and Knox Community College 5.
In the male’s section, GC Foster College won with 195 points, 13 ahead of UWI with 182, while UTech finished third with 176 points, again the only teams with over 100 points.
The male’s table was completed by Excelsior Community College 42, Mico University College 31.5, Knox Community College 18.5, Montego Bay Community College 14, CASE and Portmore Community College 10, Shortwood Teachers’ College 5, Moneague Teachers College 3, International University of the College 2, while Church Teacher’s College and Brown’s Town Community College had 1 points each.
In the field, GC Foster College’s Raymond Brown improved his personal best of 20.17 achieved by the UWI Invitational last month with another big throw of 20.35 to take the men’s shot put.
Brown’s mark was also a new record, beating the previous best of 19.58m set by O’Dayne Richards in 2012.
Fedric Dacres of UWI was the next best with 18.80m.
GC Foster College under throws coach Marlon Gayle also had record marks in the women’s discus with both Shanice Brown 49.86m and Tarasue Barnett 49.37m beating the old mark of 49.30.
On the track, Rusheen McDonald of Utech ran 45.93 in the men’s 400m final to beat the previous Intercol record of 45.96 set last year by Nicholas Maitland of UWI.
Megan Simmonds of UTech won the women’s 100m hurdles in a record 13.28 seconds ahead of her teammate Chrisdale McCarthy 13.52. The old record was 13.40 and was held by Toni-Ann D’Oyley since 2002.
Meanwhile, UTech women’s became the first team to run sub-44 in the 4x100m after crossing the line in 43.84, while their male counterparts ran a record 3:06.55 in the 1600m relay.
GC Foster College women’s also achieved a record 3:20.37 in the 1600m medley.
And the championships’ MVP Roxcine Salmon of GC Foster was also in record-breaking form. He recorded a new mark of 11:45.50 in the 3,000m steeplechase.
UWI’s Delano Williams, who was 4th in the 100m, won the 200m in 20.96 ahead of his teammate Jason Young 21.07.
Natasha Morrison of UTech took the women’s equivalent in 23.51 ahead of teammate Elaine Thompson, who did 23.55, and GC Foster College’s Audra Segree 23.91.
Jevieve Russell of UTech won the women’s 400m in 52.60 ahead of Samantha Curtis of GC Foster College 54.16, while Simoya Campbell, also of UTech, who failed to finish the 800m, topped the 1500m in 5:02.26.
