Two Caribbean superstars, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shaunae Miller-Uibo have joined the board of the Athletics Association.

The Athletics Association was recently launched as an independent organisation designed to fight for athletes’ rights.

The non-profit organisation, which has Olympic triple jump champion, Christian Taylor, as its president, said in a statement:

According to the Athletics Association, the aim is to engage sport’s governing body, World Athletics, and their own athletes’ commission in a positive dialogue.

The statement said they “will, of course, hold World Athletics to account when necessary and challenge them if they are not acting in the best interest of the athletes.”

Former world steeplechase champion Emma Coburn will be vice president. The body, which has partnered with multi-sport organisation Global Athlete, will have a board of 24 athletes representing every continent, including Allyson Felix, and Ashton Eaton.

“Since its initial inception a lot of work has been put in to establish the right governance and long-term viability that is essential to do justice to the athletes we represent,” Taylor was quoted as saying.
