Jamaica’s top junior sprinter of 2016, Nigel Ellis was disqualified at the preliminary stage of the Boys u-20 100m event, leaving Raheem Chambers and others to fight strong headwinds on Saturday’s opening day of the JAAA Supreme Ventures National Junior Championships at the National Stadium.
The athletes are seeking to qualify for the World Under-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland from July 15-19.
Ellis of STETHS, the fastest Jamaican junior this season with 10.16, false started in his heat of the marquee event.
Chambers of St Jago later came up big time to win the event in 10.70 ahead of Kingston College’s (KC) Jhevaughn Matherson 10.77. The wind reading stood at -1.8m/s.
Edwin Allen’s Patrice Moody topped the female final in 12.16, just ahead of Vanesha Pusey of Green Island, 12.17 and Camperdown High’s Rushelle Burton, 12.22. The wind reading was -5.5m/s.
Earlier, reigning World Junior champion Jaheel Hyde topped the 400 metre hurdles in 51.47 seconds to beat St Jago's Timor Barrett 51.76.
Edwin Allen’s Carifta Games champion, Shannon Kalawan, won the girl's event in 59.45. Holmwood Technical's Nicolee Foster was second in 1:00.52.
The Petersfield High's duo of Sanjae Lawrence, 19.45m and Kevin Nedrick, 19.18m, were the top two from the boys’ shot put while Janelle Fullerton of St. Jago putt the girls’ shot 14.53 metres.
