DOHA, Qatar – Olympic sprint double champion Elaine Thompson is hoping to bury the ghost of Doha 2019 and return stronger for Tokyo 2020.

Thompson ran 10.93s for fourth in the women’s 100m and later pulled out of the 200m semi-finals. She will also miss the women’s 4x100m relay.

“This is not the end I had hoped for after all the hard work and my long preparation this season,” she wrote on her social media page.

“I just have to mentally put this World Championships behind me and focus on my health and recovery,” continued the Rio 2016 Olympic 100m and 200m champion.

“I want to thank all of Jamaica for the love and encouragement, and I just have to look forward now to the 2020 season,” concluded her statement.

After her 100m final, Thompson said: “I felt great during the warm-up, but when I went out there, the body wasn’t firing.”

Asked about the problem she had with her Achilles tendon over the years, Thompson was quick to say she won’t blame her fourth-place finish on that.
“It was acting up before I came here, but I didn’t put it on my brain.

However, her coach Stephen Francis told journalists that its not the “Achilles” that ruled her out.
“Her Achilles gets tight because of something else elsewhere. She has tight muscles elsewhere on her body, which pulls on her tendons.”

“It started sometime during the 100m semi-finals, and she tried to go yesterday (Monday). It got a little worse today (Tuesday). She warmed up and couldn’t go.

Francis said they will now have to “turn our attention to trying and seeing if we can get it fixed.”

  1. Latoya Sweetie I agree he shouldn’t have had her there in the first place.. Doing all those rounds only agitated the injury.. I would have preferred her being pulled than running and looking bad. Money is not everything.

  2. Latoya Sweetie, Tokyo next year is months earlier. Hopefully the injury can heal and she can manage it as well as she did earlier in the season. Remember she beat Shelly-Ann in both races at Nationals in June this year and Shelly was the one who ran a DL race with no effort because she was tired and conserving energy. Although Shelly-Ann won very well in Doha she didn’t improve on the early season time by much, (people were predicting 10.6+) or beat Elaine’s 200m SB any time this year. I think the conditions in Doha have not helped – very late races, and brutal conditions for training.

  3. Raquel D Carter She wasn’t fully fit in training camp but her coach still let her compete knowing it would be the same outcome as 2017, he shouldn’t have her competed. Elaine need to fully recovery before competing again because this same incident going to continues if she keep competing while injured.

  4. Julia Haskins-Anderson she is injured what do you expect her to do. Stephen Francis verified it yesterday. She actually was hurting in the 100m race. An Achilles injury is hard to recover from. Athletes are not immune from injury less you forgot shelly who hurt her toe in Rio.

  5. Still luv u no matter what Elaine… I pray that you get well soon and be back on your top form, you have made the right decision from you are injured don’t force anything and make matters worse….

  6. Get well Elaine ,..you are not superwoman….you are human and disappointment happens… you just have to reset and start over 100%….be positive ..be bold….be strong ….be confident.???????????

  7. I think home girl is ok, but she’s not mentally fit. I love her and pray the best for her. Ppl pay attention to her physical body, but they don’t pay attention about her mental one. Ever since this year she hardly talk, she doesn’t look confident and hungry for the sport like she did 2 years ago. Again I pray she falls in love with her self and the sport again.
