Danielle Williams blew away a strong field to win the women’s 100m hurdles at Sunday’s (18 Aug) Birmingham Diamond League.

Williams, disqualified at the Jamaica Trials, but now back in contention for the Doha 2019 World Championships, took victory in 12.46. The time is a new meet record, equalling the mark American Kendra Harrison ran in 2016.

“To be honest I didn’t execute that properly,” explained Williams. “I banged my knee on one of the hurdles but I came away with the win so I’m happy.

“It wasn’t that important to win, this is another race on the way to the Diamond League finals and whether I won or lost, the execution was my only focus,” she added.

Every time I’ve been racing I’ve been consistent with my times and that is the main thing for me.

Harrison, the world record holder, was second in 12.66 while Tobi Amusan of Nigeria finished second in 12.71.

“I struggled in the first round, but I was able to come back. I was lane 2 she [Williams] couldn’t see me, I couldn’t see her so I had to keep going because I knew she would keep pushing me. At the next Diamond League, I hope we can be next to each other and bring out a good performance,” said Harrison.

Janeek Brown, the other Jamaican in the final, finished fifth in 12.79. American Nia Ali was fourth in 12.73.

  1. Danielle Williams is simply the best in the world right now … In the past, when she was consistently losing to the Americans, I kept saying in this forum that, if Williams would only learn to be aggressive over the hurdles she would not be easily beaten.

    Well, there it is.
