Clayton Did ‘Levell’ Things, But Hill Rose Highest At Champs Day 2

Edwin Allen athletes Tina Clayton and Bryan Levell were crowned Class 1 girls’ and boys’ winners on Wednesday’s second day at Champs 2022.

World Under-20 100-meter champion Clayton, according to several experts, came into Champs 2022 as the second favourite to Hydel’s Brianna Lyston, who ran a stunning 11.14 at Central Champs. However, after 11.23 seconds, Clayton was the one celebrating with her twin sister Tia and their mother.

Lyston, who led up to 80 metres, was caught on the line and had to settle for second in 11.26 seconds. The wind reading was negative 2.8m/s. Tia Clayton was a bit back in third, registering 11.47.

In the boys’ equivalent, Levell, who trailed for most of the race, nipped KC’s Jeevan Newby on the line, 10.25 to 10.26 seconds. Herbert Morrison’s DeAndre Daley took the bronze in 10.33.

Kerrica Hill of Hydel was the day’s star as she equalled the Class 2 girls’ 100-meter record of 11.16, set by Kevona Davis back in 2018. Hill’s teammate, Alana Reid, was also flying as she crossed the line second in 11.22. Carleta Bernard of Mount Alvernia finished third in 11.44. Mark Anthony Miller won the Class 2 boys’ 100-meter gold in a photo-finish over Gary Card of Wolmer’s, crossing the line in 10.76.

Tavaine Stewart of Herbert Morrison surprised Calabar’s Nickecoy Bramwell and KC’s Nyrone Wade. Stewart won in 11.03 seconds ahead of Bramwell, 11.06, while Wade, who looked hurt, ended 8th in 13.34. Theianna-Lee Terrelonge of Edwin Allen won the Class 3 event with a time of 11.60 seconds ahead of Camoy Binger of St. Jago (11.73). Natrece East of Wolmer’s was the only one under 12 seconds in the Class 4 girls’ final, clocking 11.81 for victory.

JC’s pair of Jvoughnn Blake, 3:56.78 and Handal Roban, 3:57.09, were the top finishers in the Class 1 boys’ 1500-metre final. Yoshane Bowen of Maggotty won the Class 2 boys’ 1500 metres in 4:12.70, and KC’s Nahashon Ruto ran 4:14.83 to win in Class 3. Edwin Allen topped Classes 2 and 3 of the 1500 metres with Rickeisha Simms of Edwin Allen, 4:41.85 and Kora Barnett, 4:44.30.

Jaydon Hibbert leapt 7.87 metres to win the Class 1 long jump final. Calvin Israel of St. Jago topped the Class 2 event with 7.33.

Victoria Christie of Camperdown won the Class 2 girls’ shot put with a throw of 14.59 metres.
