GURAGAON, India – Former American super star Carl Lewis has called on Usain Bolt to clean up Jamaica before tackling others.

Bolt, recently said Tyson Gay should have been thrown out of the sport for doping, calling his American rival’s reduced ban for co-operating with investigators, “the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.”

In 2013, Gay tested positive for steroids at the U.S. Championships and was given the reduced penalty, because he provided evidence to the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) that led to an eight-year ban for his former coach, Jon Drummond.

However, Lewis, who won nine Olympic Games titles in 100m, 200m, 4x100m and long jump, said Bolt has raised a "legitimate" issue but he should "clean up his own country first" before talking about others.

"He (Bolt) has raised a legitimate issue and I understand that, but rules are rules. But see a Jamaican is talking about it. Lots of doping issues have come out in Jamaican athletics in the last 4-5 years. He should first think of cleaning up his own house,"  Lewis told journalists at the Times of India Sports Awards on Thursday night.

Lewis, who won back-to-back Olympic Games 100m titles in Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988, went on to state, "doping is not good for sports.”

“I have said that and I have taken a stand on that in 1987 and in 2008,” added Lewis, whose long jump titles at the Olympic Games were in Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992. He also won the 200m in Los Angeles and got silver in Seoul. He won eight World Championships titles.

  1. Carl Lewis is negative. Is he responsible for every American track and field personality?
    Why should Usain Bolt?
Stop looking for the speck in anyone’s eye while the boulder is in yours.
If you still want us to see you as a star. Stop being small and tearing at the King of track and field for this century.
Be gracious and recognize the leaders of your sport. We would still remember you too. Now you seem like a jealous guy.
