The St. Jago boys pulled off the unthinkable Saturday (April 27) during the Penn Relays Championship of America High School 4x100m event, edging out Kingston College and two-time reigning Penn Relays champions and record holder Calabar, in 40.83.
Despite qualifying in 41.40 on Friday, the boys were widely an afterthought behind contenders like Kingston College who had the fastest qualifying time of 41.05.
The quartet of Vashaun Vascianna, Kavian Kerr, Javari Thomas and Rasheed Broadwell won their first Penn Relays title in the event since Yohan Blake anchored the Spanish Town-based School to a Meet Record in 2007.
Vascianna’s second leg did the bulk of the damage. Kingston College had a little trouble handing off the baton smoothly on their final exchange. Kerr still has to hold off a surging KC anchor and Calabar’s do-it-all athlete Dejour Russell, all the way through the line.
In the 4×4, Calabar and Kingston College resumed their battle from Champs. Calabar prevailed over KC, in 3:12.66 to 3:13.65. The quartet of Nile Mclaymont, Romario Northover, Shevoir Reid and Evaldo Whitehorn, were steady throughout. The fastest split saw Whitehorn anchoring in 46.77.
The boys 4×8 had a similar tone, going the same victorious direction for Calabar, with the boys running a 7:36.61 to Kingston College’s 7:40.96.
