LSU Coach Takes Conservative Approach With World U20 Champion Brianna Lyston

Jamaica’s World U20 200m champion Brianna Lyston was a late withdrawal from Friday’s (27 Jan) at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Lyston, a freshman at Louisiana State University (LSU), was down to take on Adriana Tatum of Arizona State, Thelma Davies of LSU, and Jayla Hollis of Florida in her first indoor meet.

However, LSU’s coach Dennis Shaver gave the reason for Lyston’s withdrawal.

“She is young, and I am taking a conservative approach. When I feel I have her prepared to run on a banked indoor track, she will compete,” explained Shaver for World-Track.org.

Shaver said, “after yesterday’s training on the track, I did not feel I had her ready.”

Lyston won the World U20 200m title at last summer’s championships in Cali, Columbia.

In the women’s 200m, Favour Ofili of Louisiana State University (LSU) took the gold medal in a time of 22.53 seconds, setting a personal best. Talitha Diggs of the University of Florida also set a personal best of 22.65 seconds. Kynnedy Flannel of Florida rounded out the top three in 23.18 seconds, also a personal best.

  1. There was certainly huge collective anticipation among Jamaicans and friends of track and field as we waited to see the young lyston take the track for her first college race. we will have to delay that anticipation and trust the coach’s judgement in deciding to pull her from the race. we are all lifting Brianna up with prayers and well wishes.
