The initiative of Bermuda Tourism Authority backed by the support of the country’s athletics association, has seen the birth of the Bermuda Invitational.
The event, a North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Area Permit Meeting, will be held on Friday April 22.
As part of the country’s Sports Tourism, President of the Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA), Donna Raynor, said they “thought an area permit would be great for Bermuda as it is an easy location to get to and we have all of the facilities.”
Raynor, who received a Queen’s Certificate & Badge of Honour in the Queen’s 2012 Birthday Honours List, said the idea of the meet was discussed with NACAC President,Victor Lopez.
“He thought it would be a good addition to our Caribbean circuit and the date scheduled was well thought out between Bahamas, Jamaica and Cayman,” added the Chairperson of the Organising Committee for the 2012 CARIFTA Games held in Bermuda in April 2012.
Another reason behind staging a meet of this caliber, according to Raynor, is that, “We also wanted to showcase our own Elite athletes against some of the best in the world. We are hoping to have this meet yearly on our athletics calendar especially if this is successful,” she continued.
The Bermuda track and field boss, summed up. “This level of competition has never been seen in Bermuda other than Carifta, so this is exciting as the inaugural event of this kind in Bermuda,”
