Julien Alfred --- Saint Lucia sprint sensation signs with Texas

NEW ORLEANS – Texas Track and Field sprinter Julien Alfred was named the NCAA Division I Women’s National Athlete of the Week, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday.

It is the first time Alfred, a sophomore, has earned the honour in her career.

This past weekend, Alfred became the seventh-fastest 60-meter sprinter in collegiate history when she posted a 7.10 (at altitude) at the Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. Alfred’s 7.10 is the top mark in the NCAA and No. 2 in the world this season. It also broke Teahna Daniels’ four-year-old school record in the event.

Alfred, a Castries, St. Lucia native, ran a 7.13 in the preliminary heats, giving her possession of the No. 1 and No. 3 times in school history at 60 meters. The UT sophomore also posted a career-best 23.50 in the women’s 200-meter dash last Friday – the No. 6 mark in the NCAA and tops among the Longhorns this year. With her performances last weekend, she is now the St. Lucian national record holder in the women’s 60-meter and 200-meter dashes indoors, as well as the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes outdoors.

Tuesday’s announcement marks the first time in four years that a Longhorn has been named the USTFCCCA Women’s National Athlete of the Week during the indoor season. Prior to Alfred’s recognition, the last Longhorn to do so was Courtney Okolo on Feb. 9, 2016.
