NASSAU, BAHAMAS (April 8) – Jamaica’s sprint dominance continued on the first day of the 50th Carifta Games, with Alana Reid, Alexis James, and Tramaine Todd impressing the crowds.

Todd was the only male sprinter from Jamaica to qualify for the finals and won the boys’ U17 100m medal with a time of 10.52 seconds. “It feels good to win gold, especially knowing none of my teammates qualified for this round. I knew I had to come out and win this gold medal for my country and teammates,” said Todd.

Reid won the U20 girls’ 100m final with an impressive time of 11.17 seconds, followed closely by James with 11.53 seconds. “This is something I was working towards, so it was just to come out here and do my utmost best…I did just that, and I am honestly pleased with the outcome,” said Reid.

In the 400m, Rickiann Russell put in a solid performance to win the Girls’ U20 title with a time of 51.84 seconds. Jasauna Dennis stunned his compatriot Delano Kennedy to take the Boys’ U20 400m title.
Jamaica’s Nickecoy Bramwell won the Boys’ U17 400m title easily in 47.86 seconds, while Tianna Springer of Guyana won the Girls’ U17 400m title.

Jamaica’s Kobe Lawrence (60.27m) defended his title in the Boys’ U20 discus. The country had a one-two finish in the Girls’ U20 discus with Abigail Martin (53.30m) and Cedricka Williams (53.08m).

Jamaica’s Brandon Pottinger and Chavez Penn tied for the gold medal in the Boys’ Under-20 high jump with clearances of 2.00m, with Trinidad and Tobago’s Jaidi James coming in third.

Other gold medal winners for Jamaica were Jade-Ann Dawkins in the Girls’ U20 triple jump, Ainsley Campbell in the Boys’ U20 1500m, and Dionjah Shaw in the Girls’ U17 shot put.

The Carifta Games continue over the weekend, with Jamaica’s athletes looking to continue their impressive performances.
