Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness has remembered Dr Authur Wint for his far-reaching impact on the global landscape.
“Today marks 100 years since the birth of Dr Authur Wint, OD, CD, MBE, Jamaica’s first Olympic gold medalist,” PM Holness wrote.
“We acknowledge Dr Wint’s legacy, especially his dedication and passion for the sport and health.
“His life has had a far-reaching impact on the global landscape, and he will always be remembered as Jamaica’s first Olympic gold medalists,” added Prime Minister Holness.

Born in the parish of Manchester, Jamaica, Dr Wint was a schoolboy athlete (Jamaican Boy Athlete of the Year -1937), then a club and Olympic track athlete, a Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot, a surgeon, and High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ambassador to Sweden and Denmark. He was inducted in the Black Athletes Hall of Fame in the US (1977), the Jamaica Sports Hall of Fame (1989), and the Central American and Caribbean Athletic Confederation Hall of Fame (2003). He was a founding member and first President of the Jamaica Association of Sports Medicine (JASM).
In 1989, he was awarded the Order of Jamaica by the Government.
