Yohan Blake battles at Camperdown Classic

Yohan Blake, Kemar Bailey-Cole, Terry Thomas and Jaheel Hyde encountered hard-fought 400m battles at Camperdown Classic on Saturday (8 Feb).

Hyde, representing UWI Pelicans, came out the top man on the day.

Hyde, who trailed Thomas and Blake on the backstretch, stepped on the pedal coming off the final curve.

The former Wolmer’s star pulled away in the straightaway to take the top spot in a personal best 46.47s ahead of Thomas, a member of Jamaica’s Doha 2019 World Championships team, 47.40 for 5th overall.

“Happy with the PB today in the 400m (as its) three years since I ran a PB of any kind,” Hyde told his fans on social media.

Blake, the 2011 world 100m champion, faded into third and 9th overall in 48.24.
“Wow, it been a long time since I ran a 400m. Didn’t feel bad at all, but wow, the lactic was real,” Blake shared on Instagram with a video of the race.

Bailey-Cole enjoyed a powerful 350m, but his heat to Keeno Burrell, who trailed by more than five metres into the straight.
Burrell crossed the finish line in 47.29 ahead of Bailey-Cole, the 2014 Commonwealth Games 100m champion, 47.52, for 4th and 6th overall.

Bailey-Cole, who grimaced for the last few metres, wrote below a photo expressing the pain, “Lactic acid was real, 47.52 season opener, grateful.”

Anthony Cox was the second-best overall with 46.83 while Zharnel Hughes ended as the third-best with 47.05.

Oblique Seville, 48.23, Michael O’Hara, 48.86 and Miguel Francis, 48.91, were 8th, 13th and 14th respectively.

Ristanana Tracey, the London 2017 World 400m hurdles bronze medallist, won the women’s race in 53.97.

Tracey, who is representing UWI Pelicans, beat Samantha James, 54.55 and Dejanea Okaley, 54.67.

  1. I like the early season enthusiasm for these races. The stamina building might become useful later in the season. Especially an Olympic year.
