yohan blake for Golden Spike Ostrava

The 61st Golden Spike Ostrava offers a galaxy of star names for the May 31 meet.

Barbora Špotáková & Anderson Peters

The javelin competitions will be the cherry on the cake at the Golden Spike. The organizers are pleased that world record holder and meet record-holder Barbora Špotáková will have her second outing of the season following her opener in Turnov on May 24. Her duel with Nikola Ogrodníková and Olympic silver medalist Maria Andrejczyk, who improved to 71.40 meters last year, should be one of the highlights. “There is a new athletics season here and with it another year of the Golden Spike, which I am very much looking forward to,” Spotakova said. “There will be very strong domestic and foreign competitors; I do not want to be left behind. I’m looking forward to receiving great support from the audience.”

In the men’s competition, the start of the season was marked by the sensational Doha winner Anderson Peters from Grenada, who reached 93.09 in Qatar, the fifth-best throw in history. His duel with Vadlejch and Vetter with Vesely should be the ultimate meeting experience. In addition, the Olympic winner from London, Keshorn Walcott from Trinidad and Tobago, will compete.

Yohan Blake + Jerome Blake

Two sprinters with the surname Blake will arrive in Ostrava. The legendary Yohan from Jamaica, the second-fastest man in history behind Usain Bolt over both sprints – 9.69 and 19.26 seconds – will run the 100 meters. He also has two gold and two silver medals at the Olympics and was the 100-meter world champion in 2011. His younger namesake Jerome Blake is from Canada (but of Jamaican origin) and has a silver medal from the Tokyo Olympics in the 4×100-meter relay. This year, he has already improved to 10.00 and 20.04 seconds over both sprints.

Lamecha Girma

The silver medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, Lamecha Girma will be the headliner for the 3000-meter steeplechase. On Friday, at the opening meeting of the Diamond League, he finished second by a hundredth of a second in 8.09.67. The holder of the Ethiopian record at 8:01.36, he was also a silver medalist at the World Championships 2019 and at the World Indoor Championships 2022 in the flat 3000. Many other participants will attack the standards for the World Championships and European Championships, including a new generation of Czech runners in Foller, Vích and Kovář.

Athletes Already Confirmed

Gianmarco Tamberi, Johannes Vetter, Miltiadis Tentoglou, Joe Kovacs, Tom Walsh, Femke Bol, Megan Tapper and Tina Šutej have already been confirmed for the meet, as well as world-leading sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala from Kenya, 800-meter stars Patryk Dobek, Nijel Amos and Amel Tuka plus top Czechs Jakub Vadlejch, Vítězslav Veselý, Nikol Ogrodníková, Radek Juška, Tomáš Staněk, Amálie Švábíková and others.
