In the second part of this feature (More Records to fall at Champs 2015); we now look at the remaining eight events.
8. The Boys’ class 2 800m record is also on the watch list. Aldwyn Sappleton ran superbly in 1997 to post what seems an unbreakable record 1:52:27. Since Kemoy Campbell of Bellefield graduated from ‘Champs’ there has not been another exciting middle distance runner until Jauavney James of STETHS came on the scene. He represents the best chance to challenge this record and if he fails to achieve this feat, it may last another decade because most upcoming athletes find sprinting more appealing. James won this event in 1:53.43 last year.
9. The Girls’ Class 3 100m record is likely to come under pressure. The impressive Kimone Shaw now executing a new running technique is capable of challenging Shauna Helps’ record 11.50 seconds set in 2012. Shaw’s personal best of 11.55 seconds set at the 2013 Carifta Trials should not last beyond ‘Champs’.
10. The Girls’ Triple Jump open record will be targeted. Last year Holmwood Technical’s Tamara Moncrieffe came very close to equalling Kimberly Williams’ 2007 mark of 13.52m. Moncrieffe in her final year at ‘Champs’ would like to close out her career in style with a big jump surpassing her 13.51m personal best.
11. The Girls’ Class 1 100m hurdles is on life support. World and Olympic champion Melanie Walker holds the sprint hurdle record of 13.68 seconds in this event. The talented Peta-Gay Williams of St. Jago High has the credentials to challenge this record. Williams ran 13.59 seconds at the Youngster Goldsmith meet on February 7, 2015. It is a great pity her long time rival and 2013 World Youth champion Yanique Thompson of Holmwood Technical has opted out of her final year at ‘Champs’ to attend G.C. Foster College.
12. The Girls’ Class 1 Shot Put record is just a throw away. Rochelle Frazer, the current record holder, with a heave of 13.70m will be using her glide technique to set another record in this event.
13. The Boys’ Class 2 4x100m relay record should be under threat. Calabar can choose from five or six very talented youngsters to lower the ‘Champs’ record of 40.54 seconds set by Jamaica College in 2013.
14. The newly established Boys’ Class 1 4x100m relay record is in danger. As they have been doing since last year, the Calabar quartet has been running times many countries would be proud to have as their national record. The team will be aiming to lower the record of 39.35 seconds they set last year. They were in scintillating form at the Gibson McCook Relays with a superb 39.32 seconds outing.
15. The Girls’ Class 2 4x100m relay record is within reach. The Edwin Allen High team was very impressive at the Gibson McCook Relays equalling the meet record 45.01 seconds. Natural progression would suggest that the team should run faster at ‘Champs’ and challenge the existing record of 45.04 seconds set in 2006.
