Shanice Love of Excelsior High was in record-breaking form on Thursday’s opening day of the 2016 Penn Relays here at Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania.

Love threw 54.72 mteres to break her own national junior discus record of 54.70m, set two weeks ago at the MVP meet in Kingston.

She had earlier in March thrown 52.73m to set a new Champs record. The mark also erased the old Penn Relays record of 54.29m, set three years ago by Holmwood Technical’s Gleneve Grange.

"I am feeling great right now,” said Love, who won on her final throw. Love went into her sixth and final throw in second place with 50.40m, achieved on her first attempt.

Elena Bruckner of Valley Christian (San Jose, CA) led from the first round with 53.77.

Love explained: “Going into the competition my sequence wasn’t that good, but on my last throw I decided I was going for it (record), no matter what happen, if I win or lose.”

Devia Brown of Hydel finished third with 48.34m.
