SZEKESFEHERVAR, Hungary – Bahamian Steven Gardiner, Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown and Cleopatra Borel of Trinidad and Tobago were Caribbean winners at Tuesday’s 5th Istvan Gyulai Memorial (EA Classic).

Rising star Gardiner finished strong in 44.30 to beat World champion LaShawn Merritt 44.43 and Trinidad and Tobago’s Renny Quow, who posted his second best ever time of 44.72.

Campbell-Brown, in the women’s 100m, posted a season best 10.99 (-1.2m/s win) to beat US star Tianna Bartoletta 11.18 and South African Carina Horn 11.19. 

Borel of Trinidad and Tobago won the women’s shot put with 19.26m over US Champion Michelle Carter 19.20m and Hungarian Euromedalist Anita Marton 18.46m.

World leader Justin Gatlin clocked 10.02 (-1.1m/s wind) to win the men’s 100m over Isiah Young 10.08.

The men’s 110m hurdles ended in crashes of Omar McLeod, Orlando Ortega and Aleec Harris. The win went to Sergey Shubenkov 13.27 (-1.9) ahead of Jason Richardson 13.35 and Aries Merritt 13.40.

In the B race, Konstadinos Douvalidis of Greece won in national record of 13.33 (-1.2).

The women’s sprint hurdles win went to American Lolo Jones in a season best 12.69 (-0.1) ahead of Queen Harrison 12.72 and Andrea Ivancevic, who finished third in a Croatian record 12.87.

Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar cleared 2.36m after two failures at 2.34m to beat Bahamian Donald Thomas, who cleared 2.34m.
