Jones Earns Hi-Point Scorer of the Meet

Akela Jones continued an impressive start to her K-State career with perhaps the best showing by a Wildcat so far this season. Already with the 60-meter hurdle school record to her name, Jones, a transfer from Oklahoma Baptist, dominated her way to first-place finishes in the hurdles, as well as the long jump, while also taking second in the 60-meter dash and sixth in the shot put. Her performances gave her a total of 20 points to earn hi-point scorer of the meet.

Said Rovelto on Jones, who competed in a team-high four events, "I thought she did a really nice job, not just competing, and ending up with the results she did, but managing that whole chaotic situation."

The junior opened competition in the long jump, leaping 6.23m, 6.31m and 6.33m/20-09.25 in her first three tries to easily dispatch a field of eleven. Her final mark of 6.33m bested second-place finisher Jayhawk Sydney Conley's leap of 6.03m/19-09.50, while also putting her at No. 2 in school history in the event. The best mark in the event by a Wildcat since Nina Kokot set the school record at 6.43m/21-01.25, Jones' leap beat out her previous indoor PR of 6.26m/20-06.50 and was a Triangular meet record.

Far from finished, Jones earned another point for K-State by finishing sixth in the women's shot put (12.46m/40-10.50) and took to the track in the both the 60-meter and 60-meter hurdles. In the latter, Jones nearly bested her previous PR and school record mark set this season of 8.17, finishing first overall in 8.18 seconds – a Triangular meet record. She closed out her day with a second-place finish in the 60m, clocking in at 7.47 seconds to give her both a PR and the No. 4-fastest time in school history.
