GLASGOW – Two Jamaicans won gold medals in the evening session on day 2 of athletics at the Commonwealth Games here at the Hampden Park Stadium (Live links below).

O’Dayne Richards, in a huge surprise, threw Area record and meet record of 21.61m in the 4th round to take the shot title from the favoured Tom Walsh (21.19m, less than he managed in qualifying). Tim Nedow of Canada took bronze with 20.59m. 

Later, in the final of the 100m, Usain Bolt´s training partner Kemar Bailey-Cole, after a poor start, clocked 10 seconds flat, the time he did in semis -0.5). England’s Adam Gemili was next with 10.10 (10.07 +0.7 in semis), Nickel Ashmeade 10.12 for bronze. Richard Thompson of Trinidad & Tobago didn’t make it past the semi, clocking 10.19. 

In the women 100m, Jamaica finished 2-3 with Veronica Campbell-Brown 11.03 (11.02 in semis +0.5) and Kerron Stewart 11.07. The winner was Blessing Okagbare from Nigeria in meet record and second fastest in the World this year 10.85 (+0.3). Britain’s Asha Philip ran a PB of 11.18 for 4th and Schillonie Calvert of Jamaica 11.21 as 5th (11.08 in semis). 

Michelle Lee Ahye was a DNS in the semis. 

Jamaica’s Stephanie McPherson was fastest in the 400m semis with 50.69. Novlene Williams Mills and Amantle Montsho went 1-2 in semi-final 3 (50.73 to 50.96). Christine Day, the third Jamaican, took semi-final 2 in 51.02.

Damian Warner of Canada leads day 1 of the decathlon with 4378. England’s John Lane (4294) and Ashley Bryant (4173) are both heading for over 8000. Kurt Felix of Grenada has 4228. Warner ran 47.78 for 400m, Kurt Felix cleared 2.11m in the high jump. 

Jamaican favorite Kimberly Williams led the triple qualifiers with 13.94m (-0.2). 

It was as predicted in the women’s hammer; Canada’s Sultana Frizell (71.97m CR), New Zealand’s Julia Ratcliffe (69.96m) and England’s Sophie Hitchon (68.72m) taking the medals.
