The 12th staging of the JAAA-endorsed Wesley Powell Invitational Track and Field Meet is slated to take place on the Excelsior School Grounds on Saturday December 13, 2014 starting at 8:30am. From its inception in 1998, the meet has made huge strides and has since then been affixed to the JAAA track and field calendar.

The meet Director will be 1988 Olympic 200m silver medallist Grace Jackson. Organizers will use this medium to honour the late Dr. the Hon. Aston Wesley Powell. Powell is the founder of the Exced Group of Schools in 1931. This meet has contributed to the development of top named athletes such as sub 10 king of the 100m Asafa Powell, many time World and Olympic Champions Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce and Melaine Walker to name a few.

Among the events to be contested are the 150m, 300m 600m 1000m 5000m (Male) 3000m (Female) field events Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put, Javelin, Pole Vault, and the exciting 4x300m Relay will close out the meet.

The 5000m and 3000m as well as all the field events serve as a qualifier for ISSA Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championship in 2015. Among the schools to have registered so far are; Kingston College, Calabar, St. Jago, Hydel, St. Hughes, St. Andrew High, Cameron Blazers just to name a few. With this said, one important clash to take place is the Class 1 Boys Shot Putt.

This event will see the likes of Warren Barrett Jnr and Vashon McCarthy renewing their rivalry once more but this time they will do this in different colour Uniforms. Former Cornwall College standout Warren Barrett Jnr has now joined forces with the Green and Black Clad Calabar high while the talented Vashon McCarthy after many misfortunes this year, trades the purple and white of Ascot high for the Dark Blues of Old Hope road Jamaica College.

Fans should expect an intriguing affair not only from this scintillating clash but from the meet in general as athletes aim to light up the track with their usual fierce rivalry as they aim to garner qualifying times or jumps for Champs 2015.
